Ivory Coast Cotton Production forecast 2016-2017

Top Commodities - Ivory Coast Cotton Production forecast 2016-2017 : Ivory Coast has lowered the forecast for its 2015-16 cotton to around 450,000 tonnes from 500,000 tonnes due to dry weather, the head of the industry association told Reuters on Friday.

The world's biggest cocoa producer is also one of West Africa's major cotton exporters. Its annual output was about 400,000 tonnes before a 2002-2003 civil war divided the country and halved output. Peace returned in 2011.

"Rain was rare during the planting season in May and June. We expect production of 450,000-460,000 tonnes," Intercoton president Lacina Tuo said.

Seedlings were planted over 400,873 hectares at the end of July down from 450,000 expected initially. The association is advising farmers to use inputs and fertilizer and aim to boost production to 1.1 tonnes per hectare.

Farmers said lack of rain had damaged their plantations, which are in the north of the country.

"Lots of plants are dead and lots of hectares aren't as good as they should be because of the lack of rain," said Adama Ouattara, who farms near Korhogo in the cotton belt.

Ivory Coast produced 450,000 tonnes last season and output has risen steadily over the past five years. Authorities project 600,000 tonnes production in the 2016/17 season.

Cotton planting in Ivory Coast generally starts in the second half of May with the first rains and harvesting begins slowly in late October before picking up sharply in December.
